“In a decaying society, art, if it is truthful, must also reflect decay. And unless it wants to break faith with its social function, art must show the world as changeable. And help to change it.” - Ernst Fischer

Gandhi Day

Best known for pioneering satyagraha—resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa or total non-violence—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Mahatma Gandhi. Today is the 140th anniversary of his birth.

Well, if not all, most are.

"Only island nations, such as Iceland, have logical borders, in this sense. Many national borders are absurd, and the abolition of the nation is justified on that ground alone. Hundreds of divided villages and towns in Europe are symbols of this nationalist absurdity. It illustrates the hypocrisy of the nationalists, who found division unacceptable in Berlin, but sacred in Putte or Mouscron or Gorizia." (source)

But then even archipelagic countries like Philippines have problems with borders as illustrated by the Sabah issue and of course, Spratlys.

Notes:
  • Silk-screen printing. I used to wear the actual shirt around but the shirt got ripped so I cut out the print and re-sewed it on my canvas sling bag which I have a penchant of using when I'm traveling across borders.
  •  Culled from a statement by this radical artist featured in one of those alternative art magazines you buy cheap in used books shops.

The Never-Ending Saga

Must I print 90 million more of these?

Notes:
  •  Silk-screen printing. Regular (or perhaps rubberized or whatever was available in my leftover stockpile that time) white textile paint on black shirt. Font should be Arial Bold or something.
  • A going-away gift for Tonyo (yep, the one wearing it) for his home-vacay in Galicia, Spain.
  • Why? Because he believes so. And there, he won't go desaparecido for brandishing such around. At a bar or something, people was asking him what cool band that was he was wearing: Patalsikin si Gloria. Uy, good idea!
  • Actually, it was a crazy idea over beer & karaoke. So, why not?
  • Last time I heard, Tonyo's with wife Pressia (who's doing development work) in Guatemala and expecting a little Tonyo/Pressia soon.

Free Burma!

Notes:
  • That violent Sept. Burma clashes prompted me to sketch this back in 2007.
  • The idea was ripped from a movie poster somewhere.

Hope Generator

Notes:
  • Made for my university student publication in a magazine issue with the back-to-back theme: hopeful vs. hopeless back in 2004 (election season as well). Situation then: grim. Now: grimmer.
  • Obviously inspired from the Got Milk? ads.
  • Models are my arki classmates snatched from their cigarette breaks. =)
  • Not an endorsement for Hope.Geez, no.

My Senator #1

If there's someone whose unswerving integrity and sincerity in bringing about real transformation in Philippine society I could personally vouch for, it would be Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel.

Pin Buttons and/or Lapel Stickers
Tee
All other stuff.
Posted by Picasa

Notes:
  • Hand-drawn, scanned and live-traced via Illustrator, then further edited with Photoshop.
  • The colors seems a bit drab, yah. But the idea was going vintage Russian poster art colors. I figure that brighter colors will flood the streets (literally) come election season and I so want this design to be set (way) apart from them.
  • Typography is inspired from a Latin American poster (or was it a book cover?): La Pobre (whose link I sadly could no longer find.)
  • I like that I was able to slip in A! (the oft-used, at least amongst its members, contraction for Akbayan) into the design. Akbayan is of course Risa's Party.
  • This is now free for all. At least for those who wish to spread the RISA love. Feel free to use & tweak (or pimp!) but please never for campaigns other than Risa's. For higher reso images, please email me at: pixel1982 (at) gmail (dot) com

Make the Green Switch Now

Notes:
  • Visual support for an advocacy campaign project I drafted for my Introduction to Development Communication class in OU. I'm not sure if I faired well. I went AWOL. (Oops. Unnecessary disclosure of facts trivial. I take that back.)
  • There was too much elements I wanted to bring in. Say, slogans, symbolic elements, etc. There's still quite a helpful there. But yah, I did snip out a lot, considering.
  • I figured that I'd publish the blog (and the images) anyway so it may serve its purpose, somehow.

Waste No Vote

Notes:
  • As the date indicates, did this for the 2004 elections via the Laya Movement.
  • For stickers given out to first time voters after voter's trainings we facilitated.
